In Honor Of - Merging Past and Present

A vision to renovate an abandoned building at 733 Euclid St. NW for a community center soon uncovered an undocumented chapter of postCivil War history. The heroines of this chapter are the women who cared for and educated Black children as members of the National Association for the Relief of Destitute Colored Women and Children from 1863 until 1999.

Hidden gems are embedded in every community as teachers, mothers, activists, and volunteers, who work without recognition or fanfare. “In Honor Of” finds these hidden gems and gives them an opportunity to be recognized for the work that they do. The honorees are nominated and selected by a community process and awarded in front of family, friends and colleagues.

This year’s In Honor Of gala’s sole honoree is the late Sylvia Robinson, ECAC Founder and only Executive Director. As a tribute to Sylvia, we have moved the event to ECAC to honor Sylvia in the space and community she had a profound impact on.

Like many non-profits we have a mission to change the world with limited funds and staff but with great passion and community involvement. But our cause runs deeper than our day to day activities. We were entrusted with a legacy. Our mission honors this legacy and we hope you will be a part of it.

ECAC is a model for a true community center - not one
imposed on a community, but one built by the
community. Our activities are designed to rebuild
social networks, empower people and organize
around a common vision. “Discover” the treasure that
has always been here serving the community since
1927.
